Darrell Herling

Mr. Darrell Herling is the division director for Systems Engineering and Integration within PNNL's National Security Directorate, where he oversees a staff of more than 350 with a range of technical, systems engineering, policy, and project management expertise. Systems Engineering and Integration staff members apply a diverse set of science and engineering capabilities to develop and deploy solutions that address complex domestic and international challenges. By combining technical expertise with domain knowledge, disciplined program management experience, and robust analytical tools and processes, this multidisciplinary and holistic approach is fundamental in helping our national security, defense, intelligence, and civilian agency sponsors deliver mission impact while balancing multiple requirements.

Mr. Herling holds a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering and has been a key technical and organizational leader at PNNL for more than 20 years. He previously served as manager of the Energy Materials group, which develops holistic solutions to energy efficient conversion and storage technologies and advanced structural materials for a range of applications. Mr. Herling also was a Chief Engineer, responsible for the development of lightweight and functional materials for transportation and industrial markets in addition to numerous project manager and principal investigator roles. Mr. Herling has authored or contributed to more than 50 publications and holds seven U.S. and four foreign patents. He also has won a number of awards, including two R&D 100 awards, four Federal Laboratory Consortium awards and a Financial Times award for best technology for his work to develop and deploy innovative technologies for the defense and transportation markets.
